Why Obsidian Became The Understanding Company

Our mission grew beyond one product. The name changed because the work did.

The question changed.

Obsidian began with a financial mission. Direct listening in Detroit widened the problem: the decisions people faced were shaped by more than money alone.

What listening revealed.

Financial strain did not appear by itself. Health pressure, time, information, and access shaped the same choices. That is a field observation from our work, not a universal outcome claim.

Why the name changed.

Obsidian named a banking ambition. The Understanding Company names a broader responsibility: helping people and institutions understand connected conditions.

Where the work lives now.

Vueni explores health and financial context. LinkingLiterature focuses on literacy and approachable AI learning. Civic tools remain an institutional application direction. All three sit beneath Augmented Understanding.

What Augmented Understanding means.

It brings lived context and relevant signals together to make a situation clearer. It does not replace human judgment or turn understanding into automatic advice.

What remains constant.

Detroit, Black communities, privacy, dignity, literacy, and understanding over advice remain the moral center of the work.

This is an evolution, not a departure.
